    Election Cancellation

The Commandant-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Aminu Daurawa, has declared that he will not campaign for any politician ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Daurawa stated his position in a Hausa-language message published on his Facebook page on Saturday amid criticism over his inclusion in the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign advisory committee in Kano.

Ibom Focus reports that Mr Daurawa and Abdullahi Saleh Pakistan, a former chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), were listed among Islamic clerics appointed to the committee.
Their inclusion sparked debate over the involvement of religious leaders in partisan politics.

In his Facebook post, Mr Daurawa distanced himself from political campaigning, declaring, “I am not a politician, and I will not campaign for anyone.”

He expressed hope that Nigerians would be led by a just and compassionate leader who would protect the rights of the poor and improve their living conditions.

“I hope that whoever will be just, compassionate to the poor, defend their rights and work to ease the affairs of their lives be granted victory by Allah,” he said.
The Hisbah chief also prayed for leaders who would prioritise the interests of the people above their personal ambitions.

“May Allah grant us leaders who are truthful, trustworthy and God-fearing, who will put the interest of the people above their personal interests,” he added.

However, Mr Daurawa has yet to directly address his inclusion in the APC campaign advisory committee or his position within the APC-led government of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Islamic Clerics Divided Over Tinubu’s Re-election Bid

Mr Daurawa’s declaration comes amid divisions among Islamic clerics in northern Nigeria over President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027.

Some prominent Islamic leaders have openly endorsed the president’s re-election, while others have criticised his administration and called on him to reconsider his ambition.
Among Tinubu’s supporters is Sani Jingir, a senior leader of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), who has repeatedly defended the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

In August, Mr Jingir reaffirmed his support for the ticket in Kano and urged Muslims to prepare their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2027 elections.

Also in August, more than 500 Islamic scholars and clerics from northern Nigeria endorsed Tinubu following a meeting with APC governors and other political stakeholders.
In September, the Muslim Intellectuals Forum, comprising Muslim women scholars, preachers and Da’awah leaders from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, also endorsed the president’s re-election bid.

However, opposition to Tinubu’s second-term ambition has also emerged among Islamic organisations.

In October, more than 1,000 clerics operating under the Ko Da Naka platform, in collaboration with the AFAQ Educational Foundation, urged the president to reconsider his re-election bid.
The clerics cited insecurity, economic hardship and the migration of skilled professionals as major concerns.

In a communiqué issued after a conference in Kano, they criticised aspects of the administration’s economic policies and demanded urgent action to address killings, kidnappings and terrorism.

They also urged Islamic scholars to stand for justice and avoid being used as instruments of partisan politics.

Unlike clerics who have openly endorsed or opposed Tinubu’s re-election, Mr Daurawa’s latest statement emphasises his refusal to campaign for any politician.
