Some aggrieved women from Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State have protested in front of the Government House, Port Harcourt, over the alleged assault of a female councillor, Cynthia Nwala, by some persons allegedly on the orders of the council chairman, Obinna Anyanwu.

Recall that Nwala had accused the Chairman of Etche LGA, Obinna Anyanwu, of ordering his Chief Security Officer to manhandle her, alleging that aside ensuring she was beaten, she was also stripped.

The women, along with some female students during the protest, expressed annoyance at the treatment meted out on Nwala, saying it was unacceptable.

Speaking to newsmen, Nwala and her league of protesters called on the state government and other relevant agencies to intervene in the matter by asking the council chairman the reason behind his action.

“I am the Leader of the House, Etche Legislative Assembly. We are on a protest because the women from my community heard that I was brutalised and stripped.

“They want the person behind what happened to me arrested or let the chairman provide the person that did that to me,” she stated.

One of the protesters said, “We are angry the way they treated our leader and how they beat our fellow woman like that. We don’t like it and we want the police and other security agencies to look into the matter.”

Meanwhile, lawyer for Etche House leader, Godspower Egbule, told our correspondent in a telephone interview on Thursday that he had petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, over the alleged assault on his client.

Reacting to the allegations, the Chairman of the Council, Anyanwu, denied that his CSO, Chinedu Onyeche, assaulted the female lawmaker.

The Chairman in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Robinson Oluor, explained that the disagreement emanated between the lawmakers and that the leader of the House attempted to move away with the assembly’s mace before she was intercepted.

When contacted, the spokesman of state Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said the matter was still under investigation, adding that if it came to the point of making arrest, the command would do so.
