Nigeria Eyes Global Defence Hub Status as AFRIDEX 2026 Gains FG Backing

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to inter-agency collaboration, innovation, and national development ahead of the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stated this during a courtesy visit by Major General Umar Alkali and his delegation at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Describing AFRIDEX as “a very special programme,” Tunji-Ojo stressed that meaningful progress in Nigeria’s defence and security architecture can only be achieved through collaboration rather than isolated efforts. He urged institutions to embrace openness and strategic partnerships to maximise national impact.
The minister commended the initiative as a vital platform for showcasing innovation, particularly among Nigerian youths excelling in digital and cybersecurity fields. He noted that promoting such talents is key to boosting national pride, economic growth, and global competitiveness.
Highlighting the role of research in development, Tunji-Ojo called for stronger connections between innovation and market opportunities. He said platforms that bring together innovators, manufacturers, and investors are essential to translating ideas into tangible economic value.
He further encouraged organisers to make AFRIDEX an annual event, acknowledging that while the maiden edition may face initial challenges, it would provide valuable lessons for future improvements. He also called for broader collaboration across security and intelligence agencies, emphasising the need for collective progress over institutional rivalry.
Reaffirming the ministry’s support, the minister described AFRIDEX as an initiative that represents the future of Nigeria’s defence and security landscape, adding that sustained efforts would attract global participation and strengthen indigenous industries.
On visa facilitation, Tunji-Ojo acknowledged ongoing reforms but recommended the creation of a dedicated support desk to ensure seamless entry for international participants expected at the event.
Earlier, Major General Umar Alkali thanked the minister for his support and formally introduced AFRIDEX as a premier global defence and security exhibition scheduled to hold from October 26 to 29, 2026, at Eko Atlantic City, Lagos.
Organised with the backing of the Federal Government and hosted by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the event is expected to attract over 30,000 participants and 500 exhibitors from across the world. It will showcase innovations spanning land, air, maritime, space, and cyber domains.
Alkali подчеркнул the critical role of the Ministry of Interior in ensuring the success of the exhibition, particularly in the areas of security coordination and visa facilitation. He also formally invited the minister to participate and sought the ministry’s support in promoting the event and mobilising agencies under its supervision.
The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to partnership and a shared vision of positioning Nigeria as a global hub for defence innovation and security solutions.
