Tension In Enugu Communities As River Turns To Blood
Information reaching us that, Residents of the communities of Nomeh, Unateze, Mburumbu, and Nkerefi in Enugu state’s Nkanu East Local Government Area are reportedly living in fear because the Nvuna River, their only source of water, has allegedly turned to blood.
Community members who raised an alarm following the unusual occurrence speculated that fishermen and robbers might have been responsible for the unexpected occurrence. However, an ethanol processing firm in the Ituku Ozalla region of the state was accused of dumping waste water into the river.
The state governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, dispatched a team of experts led by his special adviser on water management, Chief Dubem Onyia, on a fact-finding mission to the site in an effort to stop the situation and prevent an outbreak.
Following their inquiry yesterday, the state government’s team concluded that there was still pollution. They did, however, obtain water samples for further research in the lab.
The researchers also discovered that the effluent had killed all living creatures in the river, including fish. They also found that the water body gave off an odour. Chief Onyia, who expressed the state government’s concern to the citizens of the communities, advised them to stop drinking water from the river. Fear grips Enugu communities as river turns to ‘blood’ Prior to the river cleaning, he assured that the state government was already considering emergency measures such as digging boreholes for the affected communities.
Hon. Onyia stated that once laboratory tests and additional contact tracing are completed, the state government will take further action.
