Labour Party Speaks On Merging With PDP, Atiku Ahead Of 2027 General Elections

The Labour Party (LP) has disclosed that it has no plans to merge with other political parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was stated by the party’s spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, in a release on Thursday, while revealing that the party is yet to take any decision regarding on what transpired in the 2023 presidential election, moving forward.

He added if the party takes any decision, “Nigerians will be properly informed”.

The LP was responding to a recommendation by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in February, that opposition parties should join forces to defeat the ruling APC in the next presidential election.

Atiku, on Tuesday, had expressed concerns that Nigeria was moving towards a “one-party dictatorship” state and called on other opposition parties to come together to defeat the ruling APC.

Reacting, the LP said Atiku’s call “was only a proposal and every Nigerian should be interested in making democracy work in Nigeria and that what we have presently is an autocracy”.

“There was nowhere in the response that the purported merger between LP and PDP was mentioned.” Ifoh emphasised.

Also, the ruling APC had scolded Atiku, over the proposal, saying the ex-VP and his party failed at the polls since 2015 and have failed to offer credible opposition to Nigerians.
