Nigeria, EU Strengthen Ties at 8th Ministerial Dialogue in Abuja
Nigeria and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors following the 8th Nigeria–EU Ministerial Dialogue held in Abuja on Monday.
The high-level meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies from both sides to review existing relations and explore new areas of collaboration.
Nigeria’s delegation was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, while the European Union team was headed by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas.
Speaking at the opening session, Tuggar described Nigeria–EU relations as enduring and strategic, built on mutual respect, shared values, and a strong commitment to multilateralism. He noted that the dialogue, themed “Partnership for Sustainable Development and Security,” reflects a joint resolve to deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
Kallas, in her remarks, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to Nigeria as a key partner in Africa, highlighting ongoing cooperation in areas such as peace and security, trade and investment, digital transformation, climate action, and migration.
Discussions on security focused on counterterrorism, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, and stability in the Sahel region. Nigeria commended the EU’s continued support, particularly its assistance to the Multinational Joint Task Force, and welcomed the formal establishment of the EU–Nigeria Peace, Security and Defence Dialogue.
Both parties also expressed concern over rising security challenges in West Africa and stressed the importance of coordinated responses, including sustained support for ECOWAS.
On the economic front, the EU was reaffirmed as one of Nigeria’s largest trading and investment partners, with over 200 European companies currently operating in the country. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation beyond hydrocarbons, focusing on agriculture, manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial innovation.
The EU also highlighted investments under its Global Gateway initiative, spanning digital infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and energy development.
Energy and climate change featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides emphasizing the need for a balanced transition to renewable energy. Nigeria reiterated its commitment to global climate goals but raised concerns about the potential impact of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism on developing economies. Both parties agreed to continue engagement on climate financing, technology transfer, and equitable transition frameworks.
The dialogue further underscored Nigeria’s emergence as a digital innovation hub, with both sides calling for stronger collaboration in research, digital payments, startup funding, and participation in EU programmes such as Horizon Europe.
On migration, Nigeria and the EU acknowledged the need for humane and balanced approaches. Progress was recorded with the initialling of the Nigeria–EU Readmission Agreement, alongside discussions on legal migration pathways, labour mobility, and efforts to combat human trafficking and irregular migration.
Humanitarian issues were also addressed, with Nigeria expressing appreciation for EU support to internally displaced persons and ongoing efforts to provide lasting solutions for affected communities. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in humanitarian response and resilience-building.
At the end of the meeting, Nigeria and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration across priority areas, including security, trade, governance, migration, and sustainable development.
The 8th Nigeria–EU Ministerial Dialogue marks another milestone in the evolving partnership between both parties, with a shared resolve to translate commitments into concrete actions that will drive stability, prosperity, and sustainable growth.
