Across Oceans, United by Purpose: Nigeria and Venezuela Celebrate 61 Years of Diplomatic Partnership

The Federal Government of Nigeria proudly commemorates the 61st Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, a milestone that reflects more than six decades of friendship, solidarity, and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two nations.

Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Venezuela were formally established on 15 March 1965, laying the foundation for a partnership that has continued to evolve through political dialogue, economic engagement, and cultural exchanges between Africa and Latin America.

Over the past six decades, both countries have maintained cordial relations anchored on shared historical experiences, including struggles for national sovereignty, commitment to South–South cooperation, and a common aspiration for equitable global development. Nigeria and Venezuela have consistently demonstrated mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty and have strengthened ties through diplomatic engagement, bilateral consultations, and cooperation within multilateral platforms.

Nigeria and Venezuela also share strategic commonalities as major energy producing nations and members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, which has fostered collaboration on energy policy, global market stability, and resource-driven development. Over the years, both countries have explored avenues for cooperation beyond the oil sector, including trade, aviation, education, and cultural diplomacy, reflecting a shared commitment to broadening the scope of bilateral engagement.

As Nigeria and Venezuela mark 61 years of diplomatic relations, the Federal Government of Nigeria expresses confidence that the partnership between both nations will continue to grow stronger in the years ahead. Nigeria looks forward to expanding strategic cooperation with Venezuela in areas that support sustainable development, energy transition, and global peace.

The Government of Nigeria reiterates its unwavering commitment to strengthening the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Venezuela for the mutual benefit of both peoples and in the spirit of global partnership.
