Anything Less Than U.S. Control Of Greenland Is ‘Unacceptable’; Trump Declares
Donald J. Trump, United States President has declared that the Americans “need Greenland for the purpose of National Security.” He warned that Russia or China could take control of the territory if the US and its allies fail to act. Trump made the remarks in a statement posted on his Truth Social account, where he linked Greenland’s strategic importance to what he described as a key US defence project.
“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building,” Trump wrote. He added that the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) should take the lead in ensuring US access to the Arctic territory.
“NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” the president said. Trump further argued that NATO’s strength and effectiveness depend largely on American military power, which he credited to his leadership.
“Militarily, without the vast power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term, and am now bringing to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent – Not even close!” he stated. According to Trump, NATO would become significantly stronger if Greenland were under US control. “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES,” he said. Trump concluded by rejecting any alternative arrangement, declaring that “anything less than that is unacceptable.”
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and has increasingly drawn global attention due to its strategic Arctic location and growing geopolitical competition involving major world powers. On Sunday, it was reported that the United Kingdom had opened discussions with key European allies on the possibility of deploying a multinational military force to Greenland.
This move was intended to discourage Trump from pursuing his long-standing ambition to bring the Arctic island under American control. According to a report by The Standard, senior defence officials were reportedly sketching out early plans for a potential NATO-led operation that could see troops, naval vessels and aircraft positioned to secure Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The focus of the proposal, the report noted, was to strengthen Arctic security against perceived threats from Russia and China while easing tensions triggered by Trump’s rhetoric. According to reports, British officials recently consulted counterparts in France and Germany as ideas around the mission begin to take shape.
Although still at a preliminary stage, the discussions were aimed at offering Trump a political off-ramp by demonstrating that European allies were prepared to take on a greater share of the security burden in the High North.
