Nigeria to Begin Large-Scale Local Production of Military Weapons Within One Year — Defence Minister
Nigeria will commence large-scale local production of military weapons and other defence equipment within the next year as part of efforts to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen the country’s defence capabilities.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, disclosed this after attending the maiden Africa International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026, which brought together African governments, military institutions, defence manufacturers and technology innovators to explore opportunities for security cooperation.

Musa said the Federal Government was committed to developing Nigeria’s indigenous defence industry through the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), with emphasis on investment, research, technology transfer and partnerships with international manufacturers.
According to him, the initiative would enable Nigeria to manufacture more military equipment, weapons, ammunition and other essential defence systems locally, while improving the operational capacity of the Armed Forces.
The minister explained that expanding domestic production would help Nigeria meet its military requirements more efficiently and reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers for critical defence materials.
He added that AFRIDEX would provide a platform for Nigeria to establish strategic international partnerships, exchange technical expertise and attract investments into the country’s defence manufacturing sector.
Musa further stated that the initiative would position Nigeria to supply military equipment to other African countries, thereby strengthening regional security cooperation and promoting the growth of the continent’s defence industry.
