Nigerian, Zambian Armies Seek Stronger Ties to Combat Africa’s Security Threats
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for stronger military cooperation between Nigeria, Zambia and other African countries to tackle emerging security threats across the continent.
Shaibu made the call on Monday, October 26, 2026, during a bilateral meeting with the Commander of the Zambia Army, Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele, on the sidelines of the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026 in Lagos.
The Nigerian Army chief stressed the importance of intelligence sharing, joint military training and coordinated operations in addressing terrorism, insurgency, transnational organised crime and unconstitutional changes of government.
He noted that the growing complexity of security challenges across Africa demands collective action, emphasising that no country can effectively confront the threats alone.
Shaibu reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening military relations with Zambia and other African partners, particularly in counter-terrorism operations, peace support missions, professional military education and capacity development.
In his remarks, Zyeele commended the Nigerian Army for its contributions to regional security and its efforts to combat terrorism.
He expressed Zambia’s willingness to deepen military relations with Nigeria, noting that stronger cooperation would improve operational effectiveness and advance the shared security interests of both countries.
The meeting was part of Shaibu’s engagements at AFRIDEX 2026, which has attracted African military leaders, defence industry stakeholders and strategic partners to explore opportunities for defence cooperation, technological advancement and collective responses to emerging security challenges.
