NHRC Orders Investigation into Viral Video Alleging Unprofessional Conduct at Uyo Office

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered an immediate investigation into a viral social media video alleging unprofessional conduct by personnel at its Akwa Ibom State office in Uyo.

The Commission expressed serious concern over the allegations, stressing that its personnel are expected to treat every complainant with dignity, respect and professionalism, regardless of any provocation.
In a statement reacting to the incident, the NHRC emphasised that the protection of human rights must begin with the way individuals seeking assistance are treated by the Commission’s staff.
It stated that its professional standards do not permit personnel to treat complainants improperly, even when provoked.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chief Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, has consequently directed an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
According to the Commission, appropriate administrative measures will be taken in line with existing rules if any violation is established.
The NHRC reiterated its commitment to providing accessible, free, timely and accountable services to members of the public.
It also urged anyone experiencing difficulties accessing its offices to report such challenges through its toll-free line, 6472.
