Nigerians Now Saying Food Becoming Too Cheap; Oshiomole

The senator representing Edo north, Adams Oshiomhole says some Nigerians are now claiming that food prices are becoming too cheap. Oshiomhole spoke during an apperance on Channels TV last week. “The truth is this, we promised radical reforms,” he said. “There are Nigerians now who are saying food is becoming too cheap.” Asked about what President Bola Tinubu will campaign with as he seeks re-election, the former Edo governor said the administration’s reforms are bearing fruit. “I even heard some opposition member saying the president is manipulating food prices to crash,” Oshiomhole said. “So they are angry that the food prices are down.” The lawmaker, who is also a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said he supports the president’s tax reform laws. “The facts on the ground show that President Tinubu’s tax policy is consistent with the values of a progressive government,” he added. “And this is a progressive tax policy that places a higher burden on those who earn more while offering tax exemptions to those who earn less.” In October 2025, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused the Tinubu-led government of manipulating food prices to score political points ahead of the 2027 elections. The party’s national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the reported decline in prices was “artificial” and driven by import waivers that had flooded the market with cheap foreign food, hurting local farmers already battling insecurity and inflation. In December 2025, the senate asked the federal government to cut fertiliser prices to protect farmers’ livelihoods amid falling farm-gate prices and rising input costs.
