Army Dismantles Terrorist Hideouts, Moves IDPs to Central Camp in Monguno

The relocation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Gana Ali and Stadium camps in Monguno, Borno State, to the Rapid Response Camp has commenced as part of intensified efforts to strengthen security and curb insurgent activities in the area.
Over the years, persistent attacks on rural communities by insurgents have forced thousands of residents to seek refuge in Monguno town, where they initially occupied makeshift shelters. Subsequent establishment of formal camps led to the relocation of many IDPs; however, a significant number—mainly from the Marte axis—remained in informal settlements such as Gana Ali, GG, and Stadium camps, resisting movement to the designated facilities.
Security reports indicate that these locations gradually became vulnerable to infiltration by Boko Haram/ISWAP عناصر, with some structures allegedly used to shelter and conceal insurgents. The camps’ proximity to key military positions, including Charlie 13 and Charlie 7, further heightened concerns, as troops in these areas have repeatedly come under attack from fighters advancing from the Marte axis.
Intelligence findings also revealed that the affected camps had become largely inaccessible to both residents and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) personnel, following targeted attacks that led to casualties among security volunteers previously deployed in the areas. This situation reportedly created a safe corridor for insurgents to coordinate attacks within Monguno, including recent incidents involving military personnel, immigration officers, and cases of abduction.
A notable incident occurred on April 12, 2026, when insurgents launched a coordinated assault on troops at Charlie 13. Reports indicate that while fighters advanced from Marte, an advance team had earlier infiltrated Gana Ali, where improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were planted along reinforcement routes, resulting in casualties.
Following these developments, security forces identified and cleared structures allegedly used for storing explosives and providing cover for insurgents. Prior to the operation, residents of the affected areas were given time to relocate to the Rapid Response IDP Camp, which authorities describe as a more secure and centrally managed facility.
Officials stated that the relocation is aimed at improving surveillance, coordination, and protection of displaced persons, while also disrupting channels used by insurgents to infiltrate the town.
The operation, authorities emphasized, is being conducted in line with established rules of engagement and with due regard for the safety and rights of civilians.
Residents of Monguno and surrounding communities have been urged to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and promptly report any suspicious activities. Authorities also stressed that community support remains critical to the success of ongoing security efforts.
