The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY has handed over two suspected naval impersonators to the Nigeria Police Force State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The suspects, identified as Mr David Norbert Aleji and Mr Francis Gideon Isaac, were arrested on 10 March 2026 after they were found dressed in military camouflage and in possession of suspected fake military identification cards.
Preliminary investigations revealed that David Aleji allegedly posed as a Lieutenant in the Nigerian Navy, while Francis Isaac impersonated a Midshipman. Both individuals reportedly claimed to be serving personnel aboard NNS SAGBAMA.
Further findings indicate that Aleji, who had previously undergone some training at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, is believed to be the mastermind behind the impersonation. He allegedly recruited Isaac, who resides with him, into the scheme.
A search conducted at their residence led to the recovery of additional military-related items, including a jungle hat and a pair of boots. The suspects reportedly admitted to purchasing the uniforms and accessories themselves, as well as producing the fake identification cards.
The Nigerian Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the Service and urged members of the public to report cases of impersonation to relevant authorities. The Navy emphasized that such acts are criminal offences that undermine its reputation and operational credibility.
