UK, Nigeria Renew Commitment To Strengthening Defence And Security Cooperation
The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening defence and security cooperation with Nigeria, with emphasis on military training, professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.
The commitment was reiterated when the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Pete Vowles, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
During the visit, Vowles expressed appreciation for the longstanding political, diplomatic and military relations between both countries, describing defence and security cooperation as a key pillar of the UK-Nigeria bilateral relationship.
He reaffirmed the UK’s determination to sustain existing security initiatives and explore additional areas of collaboration to address evolving regional and global security challenges.
The High Commissioner also emphasised the need for a strong and mutually beneficial partnership capable of promoting regional stability and strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to tackle contemporary security threats.
In his response, General Oluyede highlighted the longstanding historical ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, noting that both countries had maintained a productive defence relationship over several decades.
He stressed the importance of sustaining and expanding existing areas of cooperation, particularly in professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.
According to him, existing defence agreements and training programmes have continued to enhance the professional competence and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The CDS further noted that sustained engagement with strategic international partners remained crucial to improving the military’s ability to respond effectively to emerging security threats.
He added that such partnerships would also promote self-reliance, institutional resilience and operational efficiency within the Armed Forces.
Both parties expressed optimism about the future of the UK-Nigeria defence partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating existing achievements while identifying new areas of cooperation for mutual benefit.
