Olojuoro-Olomi Maximum Security Centre Opens in Ibadan, Takes In 80 Convicted Inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Service has commenced the phased operationalisation of its new Maximum Security Custodial Centre at Olojuoro-Olomi, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The facility has taken in 80 convicted male inmates following approval from the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and a directive from the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche.
The inmates were transferred from designated custodial centres as part of preparations for the eventual full commissioning and deployment of the facility.
With an initial capacity of 800 inmates, the centre has been designed to accommodate as many as 3,000 inmates when its additional sections are completed and brought into operation.
The planned expansion will provide dedicated accommodation for awaiting-trial persons, female inmates and inmates on death row.
Among the facilities provided at the centre are custodial cells with beddings, a modern kitchen, medical facilities, administrative offices, staff accommodation, recreational areas, a gate lodge and perimeter fencing.
The NCoS said the new facility would strengthen custodial administration in the South-West while providing additional space to ease congestion in existing centres across Oyo and neighbouring Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states.
Beyond increasing custodial capacity, the Service said the centre was designed to support the humane treatment, reformation and rehabilitation of inmates, as well as their eventual reintegration into society.
The phased activation of the centre will continue in line with operational needs and the completion of the remaining sections.
The Service described the project as a major investment in Nigeria’s correctional infrastructure and part of ongoing Federal Government efforts to improve public safety, strengthen security and build a more effective and humane correctional system.
