NEC To Acquire ₦119m Toyota Land Cruiser For DG

A review of the 2026 budget has revealed that the National Economic Council (NEC) plans to spend ₦119 million on the procurement of a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser jeep for its Director-General. According to the budget document, the allocation is specifically described as “Procurement of brand new Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep for the Director General/CEO of the Commission.” This comes amid broader revelations of significant allocations for luxury vehicles and facilities across key government institutions in the 2026 fiscal plan. In a related development, an analysis of Nigeria’s 2026 approved budget shows that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) intends to spend ₦1.1 billion on the construction of an annex to serve as residential quarters for presidential aides. This is in addition to ₦1.2 billion earmarked for the purchase of jeeps and other luxury vehicles, including Toyota jeeps, saloon cars, and double-cabin pick-up trucks. Similarly, the Bola Tinubu-led Presidency plans to spend a total of ₦3.3 billion on the purchase and replacement of vehicles in 2026. Budget details indicate that ₦2.5 billion has been allocated for the acquisition of State House operational vehicles, while ₦758 million is set aside for the replacement of SUV vehicles. An additional ₦115 million is budgeted for the purchase of tyres for bullet-proof vehicles, plain cars, CCU vehicles, platform trucks, jeeps, ambulances, and other operational and utility vehicles. Data on tyre-related spending by the Presidency in 2025 could not be independently verified at the time of this report, as comprehensive government expenditure details were not publicly available. However, the 2025 budget shows that ₦3.6 billion was allocated for operational vehicles for the State House, alongside ₦1 billion for SUV replacements. The trend of sustained expenditure on luxury vehicles and State House operations persists despite increasing public calls for fiscal discipline and prudent management of government resources. In 2024, findings from the GovSpend public payments portal revealed that the Presidency spent ₦366 million on tyres within a three-day period, with payments recorded on May 21, 2024, June 22, 2023, and June 24, 2023. The growing scale of these allocations has continued to draw public attention amid economic challenges facing the country.
