Information reaching Ibom Focus says that MINT’s MD On The Run Over New Naira Notes

The Senate Public Accounts Committee said it will investigate the printing of new naira notes in 2022 when the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari launched and implemented naira redesign policy.

Under the policy, N200, N500, and N1,000 notes were redesigned while the old ones were mopped up in February 2023 before the general elections.

The policy implementation resulted in shortage of cash and culminated into violent protests and attack on banks by individuals in different parts of Nigeria.

However, a Supreme Court ruling suspended the deadline for the expiration of the notice issued by the CBN to commercial to stop receiving the old naira notes.

The chairman of the Senate Public Accounts committee, Ahmed Wadada, said the panel will probe the printing of the new notes by the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting PLC (NSPMC).

He said this when the Managing Director of NSPMC, Alhaji Ahmed Halilu, and other management staff of the agency appeared before the panel to respond to audit queries by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a member of the committee, told the Managing Director to furnish the panel with necessary documents related to the printing of new naira notes.

The documents, he said, would enable the committee to know how much was printed and the amount spent on printing the new currency notes.

The chairman of the committee said the probe will come under status inquiry.

“The committee will write and your response will determine how you flow,” he said.

The House of Representatives has mandated its committee on police to investigate the murder of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Chalya Grace Silas, who was killed in Kaduna recently.

This followed the adoption of a motion moved by Beni Lar (PDP, Plateau) at plenary on Tuesday.

The house called on the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police (CP) to bring the killers to book, while urging the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure that justice was done.

Presenting the motion, Lar said Miss Grace was murdered on October 18, 2023, while jogging in Barnawa in Kaduna South LGA.

Daily Trust reports that the late youth corper was a graduate of rehabilitation sciences from the University of Jos and hailed from Tabat in Langtang North LGA of Plateau State.

She said, “The tragic incident is one of numerous murders of innocent girls and women nationwide, with perpetrators often unaccounted for or not brought to justice.

“The safety and security of the girl child is no longer guaranteed given the continued liberty and freedom enjoyed by these heinous assailants who still roam the streets preying on their next victim.

“Prompt justice in this case would deter potential perpetrators, thereby ensuring a safer environment for Nigerian children and residents.”
