Nigerian And South African Navies Hold Maiden Staff Talks — Advance Strategic Maritime Partnership

The Nigerian Navy and the South African Navy have successfully concluded their maiden Naval Staff Talks held at Naval Base Simon’s Town, Cape Town, South Africa, from 12 to 18 April 2026. The primary objective of the Staff Talks was to establish a robust framework for enhanced naval cooperation to safeguard the maritime interests of both nations and contribute to broader maritime security across the African continent.

The Nigerian Navy delegation was led by the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral AA Mustapha, while Rear Admiral S. Makhanya led the South African Navy delegation. The engagement reflects a strategic initiative endorsed by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and his South African counterpart, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, to deepen bilateral naval relations and foster sustainable maritime collaboration. Discussions during the talks focused on key areas of mutual interest, including maritime domain awareness, joint training, operational cooperation, and capacity development. These talks are expected to lead to practical outcomes that will strengthen collective responses to maritime threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational organised crime.

As part of the programme, the Nigerian Navy delegation visited the Institute of Maritime Technology and the South African Naval Museum, gaining valuable insights into South Africa’s maritime innovation, research capabilities, and naval heritage. In furtherance of the growing partnership, the South African Navy is expected to participate in the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary celebrations scheduled for June 2026. This visit will provide another opportunity to finalise agreements reached and explore new avenues for cooperation.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirms its commitment to strategic partnerships that enhance maritime security, promote regional stability, and support the collective prosperity of African nations.
