Man Jailed For Leaving Restaurant Without Paying

A Magistrates’ Court in Jos sentenced a 38-year-old sales representative on Friday to six months in prison after he fled without paying for food and drinks he consumed at a local restaurant.

The magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, issued the sentence following the defendant’s guilty plea.

In the ruling, Bokkos allowed the option of a N10,000 fine to reduce the prison term to three months.

Additionally, he mandated the convict to pay N23,500 in restitution to the restaurant owner, with the alternative of another three-month jail term if unpaid.

Prosecutor Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat informed the court that the incident occurred on August 27, reported by Charles Nentok, the restaurant’s proprietor, to the “A” Division Police Station. Gokwat stated that the defendant ordered food and various drinks totaling N23,500 before attempting to leave without settling the bill. He was subsequently apprehended and brought to the station.

The offence is considered a violation under the Plateau State Penal Code Law
