Man Drowns In Akwa Ibom River, Photos
While religious adherents and faithfuls were inside their various places of worship last Sunday, singing praises and listening to God’s word, a middle aged man met his waterloo and untimely demise, in the Ikot Okudom axis of the Atabong river.
Investigation carried out by this roving reporter revealed that the deceased , named John, a native of Ikot Akpan Eshiet, Awa in Onna Local Government Area, in company of two others, were having a field day under the bridge, allegedly smoking indian hemp around 10 am last Sunday, when death came lurking , like a thief in the night.
An eye witness account has it that the three accomplices took to their heels on sighting the patrol van of the law enforcement agents, thinking that they were coming after them, may be, based on a tip- off. The adage which says that, a guilty conscience needs no accuser, comes in handy here.
In the ensuing melee, they all had to scurry into safety by jumping into the river. Luck, however , ran out of John, said to be an ” agbero” who thrives in doing menial jobs , to earn a living ,when he couldn’t not swim majestically to the shore, thereby meeting his untimely death.
The other two friends came out of the river unscathed, while John went to the great beyond unannounced. His corpse was only found this Tuesday morning by a search party assembled to locate the whereabout of his decomposing body.
When it comes to the crusty behavior of some people, give them the benefit of the doubt. They may be drowning right before your eyes, but you can’t see it. And you would never ask someone to drown with a smile on his face.
” I can’t let the emotion of fear submerge me. Drown me. The ocean is so big, so full of life, but I won’t drown in it. I can swim. I’ve learned to swim now ”
