Man Dies After Jumping Into Well

The body of a 20-year-old man, Sodiq Olorunleye, who jumped into an abandoned well in the Shasha area of Lagos State has been recovered by officials of the state fire service.

The body was brought out several hours after he jumped into the well located in front of a mosque.

City & Crime reports that the incident which occurred around 8am on Wednesday, attracted the attention of the worshippers from the mosque who had barely finished their morning prayers when it happened.

The deceased, according to witnesses, never showed any signs of suicide or frustration, leaving those in the neighborhood wondering what must have caused it. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

Hundeyin said the incident was reported at Shasha police station by the owner of Shamseedeen mosque on Taiwo close, Shasha around 7pm same day.

He said the owner of the mosque alleged that the deceased jumped into an abandoned well in front of the mosque and that efforts to rescue him by the neighbours proved abortive.

He said, “The lifeless body of the victim was brought out around 12 noon by officials of the state fire service.

“A team of detectives were dispatched to the scene where it was discovered that the corpse had already been prepared for burial according to Islamic rites. However, investigation is ongoing.”
