Nigerian Army to Operationalise 83 Division in Benin as COAS Visits Edo Governor
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has assured that the newly established 83 Division of the Nigerian Army, with its headquarters in Benin City, Edo State, will soon become operational.
Shaibu gave the assurance on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a courtesy visit to Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House, Benin City.
He explained that the establishment of the division was part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing expansion programme, which seeks to increase its formations from eight to 12 divisions to strengthen its operational capacity and address emerging security threats across the country.
According to him, the expansion is designed to enhance military presence, improve command and control structures, and ensure faster responses to security challenges, particularly in Edo State and the South-South region.
The Army Chief disclosed that his visit was also aimed at assessing operational activities at Headquarters 4 Brigade and commissioning key military projects.

Among the projects are the Affordable Home Ownership Option for Soldiers (AHOOAS) and Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives designed to improve soldiers’ welfare and strengthen relationships between the military and host communities.
In his response, Governor Okpebholo praised the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and contributions to maintaining peace and security in Edo State.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military and sustaining collaboration with security agencies to strengthen the state’s security architecture.
The operationalisation of 83 Division is expected to strengthen the Nigerian Army’s presence in the South-South and advance its ongoing efforts to build a more effective and responsive fighting force.
