Cut Ties With US Immediately; Gumi Tells Tinubu
Popular Kaduna Based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take firm diplomatic action against United States President, Donald Trump, over his recent threat of military action against Nigeria.
In a statement on Sunday, Gumi described the comment attributed to Trump as a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and urged the government to respond decisively.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” Gumi wrote.
He advised the Federal Government to summon the U.S. ambassador to Nigeria and demand an official retraction. According to him, failure to receive one should prompt Nigeria to consider cutting diplomatic ties.
“President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” he added.
Gumi further stressed that Nigeria has alternative economic and military partnerships available, adding that the nation must not remain dependent on any single foreign power for its development and security.
“The world is no longer unipolar. Nigeria has friends elsewhere who respect our sovereignty,” he said.
His comments come amid Donald Trump’s threat to invade Nigeria to clear out ‘Islamic terrorists’ over claims of genocide against Christians.
Gumi has been known to overtime advocate negotiations with terrorists.
Earlier in September, Gumi has voiced support for a peace agreement with bandits, advocating for reconciliation.
Gumi urged security agencies not to undermine the deal but to assist in guiding the bandits toward peaceful living, drawing parallels to the rehabilitation of militants in the Niger Delta.
The cleric’s statement followed a meeting in Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina, where traditional rulers and community leaders engaged directly with some of the bandits in an effort to foster dialogue and stability.
Gumi, speaking in the Hausa language, said, “Alhamdulillah. News has come that today, Sabuwa Local Government has also held a peace settlement with the bandits in the forests, to establish peace throughout the entire local government area.”
“Those who fuel war, may Allah bring them down. And may the security agencies avoid destroying this peace agreement, but instead teach them how to live in peace, just as was done with the Niger Delta militants. May Allah bring us peace. Ameen,” the cleric added.
