Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, has tragically passed away after collapsing following a meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.
While the official announcement from INEC or his family is still pending, a source within the commission confirmed to TVC News that Mr. Ijalaye slumped and died on Monday evening.
The incident occurred shortly after he returned to his hotel room, having attended a crucial meeting earlier in the day.
The meeting, presided over by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, focused on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as discussions regarding seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.
According to reports, Mr. Ijalaye had been in good spirits and actively participated in the discussions during the meeting.
Niyi Ijalaye, an indigene of Ondo State, was respected for his commitment to the electoral process. His sudden death has left many in shock, particularly those who interacted with him earlier in the day.
Efforts to reach his Principal Administrative Officer and other top officials within the Ogun State INEC office have so far been unsuccessful. The news of his passing is expected to send ripples across the commission and the communities he served
