JUST IN: APC Expels Popular Governor From Party
The All Progressives Congress has announced the expulsion of a former Minister of Interior and ex-Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola from the party.
This is contained in a letter issued by the party’s leadership on Wednesday, accusing Aregbesola of committing anti-party activities.
The letter, titled “Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You,” accused the former minister of breaching Article 21 of the party’s constitution, which outlines disciplinary measures for members.
The letter reads in part, “At the end of the investigation, the State Executive Committee (SEC) considered the report of the Disciplinary Committee. Having carefully reviewed the findings and recommendations, the SEC resolved to approve your immediate expulsion from the APC.
“The decision was predicated on clear evidence of your actions, which undermined the unity and integrity of the party. As a result, you are no longer a member of the APC and must refrain from holding yourself out as one or acting on behalf of the party in any capacity.”
This comes three days after reported that the Omoluabi Progressives, a political group led by Rauf Aregbesola, had announced its decision to sever ties with the APC.
The group cited internal divisions, including the expulsion and suspension of key members, as reasons for the move.
In a statement released on Sunday by Oluwaseun Abosede, the group’s Organising and Publicity Secretary, the decision was described as a consensus reached by stakeholders during a monthly meeting held in Ilesa.
Representatives from the group’s 332 wards across Osun State endorsed the resolution.
Among the reasons for the departure, Abosede highlighted the ostracization of the group within APC, unfair treatment of its leaders, and the poor handling of internal party crises.
He further noted that these issues contributed to the party’s loss of popularity in the state following a poor performance in recent elections.
At the meeting, Aregbesola commended members for their loyalty to the principles of integrity and good governance.
He urged them to remain focused on the vision of the Omoluabi Progressives and pledged that ongoing efforts to reposition the group would soon yield results.
“With this decision, we are charting a new course to restore good governance and strengthen our political influence in Osun State,” Aregbesola said.
