…Pledges support for sustainability of her activities
As the first women led Non-Governmental Organization in Nigeria, exclusively established for nature conservation arrives Uruan Local Government Area Akwa ibom state, for her inauguration and ground breaking ceremony at Ndon Uruan.
Hon. Surv. Iniobong Ekpenyong, The Executive Chairman, Uruan Local Government Area Akwa ibom state, has pledged his support for Women in Nature Conservation Organization (WINCO), to succeed in her drive to maintain the ecological balance and save resources for future generations.
Ekpenyong, who was the guest of honour, was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Ndifreke Iniobong, thanked the founder of WINCO, Mrs Emem Umoh and the trustees for choosing Ndon Uruan as her global headquarters, as the region abounds with wildlife, raffia palm and timber which was rich with coastal plains and support the cultivation of crops, such as cassava, maize and economic trees.
The Council helmsman maintained that tree planting has been proven and embraced as the only natural means of reducing climate change impacts for a healthier environment.
‘Globally, environmental issues have risen to prominence and have attracted conscious deliberations, due to pronounced impacts of man’s daily destructive processes resulting in a compromised planet.
‘while some of the impacts such as loss of biodiversity might be gradual as there are host of communities around the world today that are being consumed by coastal and gully erosion, sea incursion, bush fires, floods, shortages, disease and deaths’, Ekpenyong said.
He further appealed for distributions of the seedlings to schools, hospitals, LG council’s secretariats and other public places in Uruan Local Government and beyond.
In another development, the wife of the Uruan Local Government Chairman, Mrs Ndifreke Ekpenyong, seized the opportunity to touch the lives of widows in the area, the gesture she noted was bound out of her burning desire to support the needy and the less privileged in the society.
Making the donations on behalf of Geogreat foundations, she appreciated WINCO for her timely initiative of the programme in Ndon-Uruan Community, as it would further provide opportunity for the people to be engaged productively and also extend her appreciation to other empowerment organizations for being a blessing to the people of the Area.
Dignitaries who graced the event were; the Executive Chairman, Uyo LGA, Hon Uwemedimo Udo, represented by his Vice, Mrs Sylvia Ekong, leader, Uruan 7th legislative council, Hon Sunday Bassey, Councilor representing SouthV, Hon. Uduak Akpan, Councilor south1, Hon Kingsley Idiongette, hon. Prince Ikim, represented by Mr Charles Ememobong , Representative of the commissioner for women affairs, Mrs Anietie Archibong, village head of Ndon-Uruan, Chief Edet Okon and council members, CEO, Vulnerable women Empowerment (VUMEN) amongst others.
