Akpabio Seeks Stronger Collaboration, Professionalism in National Assembly

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called for stronger collaboration between the management of the National Assembly and the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) to enhance administrative performance, accountability and professionalism.
Akpabio made the call on Friday while declaring open a three-day retreat for the NASC and top management of the National Assembly at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
The retreat, which focused on “Strengthening Institutional Synergy, Administrative Effectiveness and Professional Service Delivery in the National Assembly,” brought together stakeholders to examine ways of improving legislative administration.
Represented by Senator Babangida Hussaini, Akpabio said the success of the National Assembly was closely linked to the efficiency of its administrative system and the competence of the personnel responsible for supporting its legislative and oversight functions.
He described the retreat as an important platform for identifying institutional challenges, strengthening working relationships and developing strategies to improve service delivery.
The Senate President emphasised that effective collaboration among the various departments, directorates and agencies was necessary to achieve the institution’s objectives.
He urged the National Assembly management and the NASC to improve coordination, sustain cooperation and align their efforts towards achieving a more effective legislative service.
Akpabio also called for the adoption of innovative administrative practices, improved internal processes and the responsible use of institutional resources.
“Administrative effectiveness requires us to embrace innovation, improve internal processes, promote accountability and ensure that institutional resources are deployed efficiently,” he said.
He added that professionalism in legislative administration must be built on discipline, integrity, competence and a commitment to excellence.
Akpabio encouraged participants to use the retreat to exchange ideas, engage in constructive discussions and develop practical recommendations that would lead to lasting improvements in the National Assembly Service.
He said administrative support for the legislature must meet the standards required by its constitutional responsibilities and reflect the expectations of Nigerians.
According to him, the retreat should produce tangible outcomes rather than end with discussions and resolutions that are not implemented.
“Let this retreat be more than an avenue for discussion. Let it mark a turning point towards stronger institutional governance, more efficient administrative processes and a renewed culture of professionalism and accountability,” he said.
The Senate President noted that the real measure of success would be the ability of participants to implement the resolutions reached and translate them into measurable improvements.
He assured the participants of his interest in the deliberations, adding that he looked forward to receiving the retreat’s conclusions and recommendations for prompt consideration and implementation.
Akpabio expressed optimism that the engagement would foster stronger institutional relationships, improve administrative effectiveness and promote a higher standard of professional service delivery throughout the National Assembly.
The three-day retreat is expected to provide an opportunity for key stakeholders in legislative administration to explore practical approaches to improving institutional coordination, administrative efficiency and overall service delivery.
