VIDEO: FG Lawmaker Caught Assaulting, Punching Passerby
British lawmaker Mike Amesbury has been charged with common assault for allegedly attacking a passerby whom he claimed had threatened him.
Amesbury, the Member of Parliament for Runcorn and Helsby, was captured punching a man and continuing to hit him after he fell to the ground by surveillance footage obtained by DailyMail.
“Following a review of the evidence provided by Cheshire Police, we have authorised a charge of common assault against Mike Amesbury,” said Rosemary Ainslie, Head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime Division, Reuters reports.
“The charge follows an alleged assault in Frodsham, Cheshire, on Saturday, 26 October 2024.”
After the incident, Amesbury stated that he felt threatened while out with friends, adding that he would cooperate with any inquiries. He declined to make further public comments on the matter.
Following the altercation, Amesbury was suspended from the Labour Party, which had yet to respond to fresh requests for comment after the charge.
Local police have stated that Amesbury is scheduled to appear in court at a “later date” concerning the reported assault on the 45-year-old passerby.
