Army Invests in Welfare As COAS Unveils Ultra-Modern Shopping Complex In Asokoro

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday, 28 January, commissioned an ultra-modern Post-Service Housing Development Limited (PHDL) Shopping Complex in Asokoro, Abuja, describing the project as a strategic investment in the welfare and socio-economic wellbeing of Nigerian Army personnel and their families.
Speaking at the event, the COAS said the commissioning of the complex reflects the Nigerian Army’s enduring commitment to the holistic welfare of both serving and retired personnel. According to him, this commitment is driven through well-structured policies, prudent management of resources, and the provision of infrastructure that enhances quality of life and promotes orderly living within Army formations and estates.
Lieutenant General Shaibu explained that the shopping complex is designed to serve residents of adjoining Army barracks, improve access to essential services and stimulate legitimate economic activities within Nigerian Army estates and surrounding host communities. He noted that beyond its commercial purpose, the facility is expected to serve as a catalyst for local enterprise development, job creation and sustainable socio-economic growth.
Reaffirming his Command Philosophy, the COAS stressed that troop welfare remains fundamental to operational effectiveness and institutional resilience. He pledged sustained support for welfare-oriented initiatives that are properly managed, effectively supervised and aligned with national development objectives.
The Army Chief further emphasised that while quality construction is vital, the long-term value of the complex will depend on efficient management, strict compliance with safety standards and responsible usage by all stakeholders. He urged all allottees and users of the facility to remain safety-conscious and collectively safeguard lives and property.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for providing an enabling environment for reforms and welfare-driven initiatives within the Nigerian Army.
Earlier in his remarks, the Group Managing Director of Post-Service Housing Development Limited, Major General Isaiah Allison, said the project was conceived in line with the Command Philosophy of the COAS, which places priority on personnel welfare and sustainable development. He encouraged both military personnel and members of the public to utilise the facility to improve their economic livelihoods.
