BREAKING: Tension As Troops, Suspected Terrorists Exchange Gunfire
There was tension in Obajana town, Kogi State, on Saturday night after Nigerian troops engaged suspected terrorists in a gun battle during an attempted infiltration of the community.
Obajana hosts Africa’s largest cement plant, Dangote Cement, with an installed production capacity of 16.25 million metric tonnes per annum, making the area strategically important.
A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the incident on Sunday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the exchange of gunfire occurred as security forces carried out ongoing clearance operations in the area.
“ There was an exchange of gunfire between Nigerian troops and suspected terrorists in Obajana town, Kogi State, on Saturday night, as security forces sustained ongoing clearance operations in the area. Troops are engaging the terrorists who were reportedly attempting to infiltrate the community,” Makama wrote.
As of the time of filing this report, the Defence Headquarters has not issued an official statement on the incident.
Residents were said to have been gripped by fear following the gunfire, though details of casualties or arrests, if any, remain unclear.
The development comes amid intensified security operations in parts of Kogi State. It will be recalled that several terrorists were reportedly killed in a previous joint operation by the Nigerian Police and the military aimed at flushing out criminal elements from forests within the state.
