Teacher In Trouble As Student Dies After Receiving 162 Strokes Of Cane
A heartbreaking incident in Ogun State has sparked outrage after a student from Obada Idi-Emi High School, identified as Ariyo, reportedly died after being punished with 162 strokes of the cane.
The alleged punishment was administered by a teacher following a dispute over a broken dustbin, according to activist Adetoun, who shared the incident on Instagram.
The incident reportedly began when the teacher brought a new dustbin to Ariyo’s class, instructing students not to damage it.
Ariyo, in a lighthearted response, remarked that the dustbin had been bought with students’ money—a comment that reportedly upset the teacher. The teacher then took the matter to the principal, who allegedly ordered Ariyo’s punishment.
Acting on the principal’s instructions, the teacher allegedly flogged Ariyo excessively, causing him to collapse.
Witnesses claim that there was a delay in taking the student to the hospital, and sadly, by the time he was transported for medical help, he had already passed away.
A senior police officer, though not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, confirmed the incident to local reporters, noting that tensions in the community were high. Thanks to police intervention, the situation was brought under control.
“We are on the matter, the incident wanted to create tension but we were able to douse the tension,” the police source said.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command was yet to respond to enquiries on the incident sent to her line as of the time of filing this report.
