Sowore Rubbishes Akpabio, Says Senate President Supposed To Be In Prison If Nigeria Were To Be A Functioning Country
Omoyele Sowore, Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has strongly criticised Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, saying that he is rather supposed to be in prison than occupying one of the highest positions in the country.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on KaaTruths, Sowore said, “Akpabio should never have been a Senate President in Nigeria if Nigeria were to be a country that is functioning at all.”
He further condemned Akpabio’s record, questioning his credibility for holding one of the highest offices in the country.
“Even with our little public morality, this man doesn’t deserve to sit on such an official seat, which is one of the highest in the country,” Sowore said.
Sowore, convener of #RevolutionNow Movement added, “Akpabio should be in prison going by his antecedents, criminal past. Every other conversation around that is unnecessary.”
Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State and former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, has long faced allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
His tenure as Minister was marred by accusations of mismanagement of funds in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), a controversy that led to public hearings and probes.
However, he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
More recently, Akpabio was embroiled in controversy with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused him of marginalising female lawmakers and displaying bias in Senate proceedings.
The tension between the two lawmakers escalated when Akpabio allegedly made dismissive remarks about Akpoti-Uduaghan’s concerns over gender representation and fairness in legislative affairs.
Despite the controversies, Akpabio emerged as Senate President in June 2023, securing the backing of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership.
His election has been met with criticism from opposition figures like Sowore, who argue that his political history should have disqualified him from such a position of power.
