Enough Is Enough: Release Nnamdi Kanu Now To Avoid Doomsday, IPOB Tells Buhari Govt
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Saturday again warned the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Nigerian government to release its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to avoid unforseen circumstances.
IPOB said that the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu as the courts had ordered will “avoid doomsday.”
Ibom Focus had reported that Buhari’s government through its security agencies in collaboration with the Kenyan government arrested and renditioned IPOB leader to Nigeria in June 2021.
Although the Nigerian government hasn’t officially disclosed where it arrested Nkanu from, both Federal High Court and Court of Appeal have in separate judgment declared his arrest and extraordinary rendition as illegal. The court further barred any court in Nigeria from trying court. It also ordered the government to release him and pay him reparations for infringement of his fundamental human rights.
Also the United Nations’ working group on arbitrary detention had also found the arrest and detention of Kanu by Buhari government as illegal and gave the government six months to release him and pay him adequate compensation. The UN commission has since been ignored and the six months period had elapsed.
Meanwhile, the federal government has filed appeal at the Supreme Court against the judgment of appeal court but the appeal has since been installed after the government got Appeal Court to stay the execution of its judgement.
Recently, there have been reports that Kanu’s health is fast detonating. On Friday, he was said to have been vomiting and loosing weight. Last week, it was reported that he was being treated of eye problem at the facilities of the Department of State Services (DSS) where he was being held in solitary confinement.
Following the detonating condition of Kanu, IPOB in statement on Saturday, issued by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, said it would be in the interest of Nigeria and Nigeria government that Kanu did not die in detention.
IPOB, however insisted that those involved in torturing Kanu using the instrument of injustice and coercion will not break his resolve on Biafra project.
A statement by Powerful reads, “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command of our indomitable leaders and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu once again publicly raise alarm on the deteriorating health condition of our leader in the DSS solitary confinement.
“We, therefore, again and again, demand his unconditional release per the order of Courts so that he can get proper medical examination and treatment.
“Those involved in torturing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu using the instrument of injustice and coercion will not break his resolve nor IPOB’s resolve to demand for Biafra Independence, Not now, not tomorrow, and not forever.
“The Nigerian government and its supporters should understand that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a living legend that Biafrans will not trade with anything in this world.
“Release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally as the courts have ordered to avoid doomsday. A stitch in time saves nine.
