The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has launched an investigation into allegations some of its officers extorted N50,000 from a citizen.
The victim, Peter Michael Ikpe who brought the matter to social media said he was forced and threatened to part with the said sum after officers accused him of being a Yahoo boy ( Internet fraudster).
He said he was duly and thoroughly searched but nothing incriinating was found on him. Ikpe said the officers then insisted his hands were not clean. The young man said officers argued that his clothings were too expensive for somebody like him to afford.
Sharing a copy of the money transfer, he tweeted: “Attached to my tweet is a receipt of the transfer. This happened at Satellite Police Division, right before Mazamaza. They ransacked my luggage, laptop, phone, wallet found nothing then threatened to kill me if I don’t open my bankapp.”
According to the receipt, he made the transfer today 4 February at 04:42 in the morning to the account name Ugochukwu Christopher Igbo.
Recalling what one of the police officers said to him, Ikpe wrote: “Imagine one saying that I have an airforce 1 on and also have a MacBook that only yahoo boys have such. After going through my laugage he said my clothing looks too expensive and good for a normal guy. That only fraudsters have such good clothing.”
The Complaint Response Unit of the NPF reacted to his tweet, indicating that an investigation had begun.
