JUST IN: NFF President Speaks On Finidi George’s Resignation
Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Saturday said he has no knowledge of Super Eagles coach Finidi George resigning from his position.
This statement comes amid circulating reports suggesting that George resigned following the NFF’s announcement on Thursday about hiring a new “expatriate technical adviser” for the team.
This decision was prompted by the Super Eagles’ poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.
Currently, the Super Eagles have accumulated only three points out of a possible 12, placing them fifth in their six-team group, which significantly threatens their chances of qualifying.
The team’s underwhelming performance has sparked widespread discontent among Nigerian football fans, who are still disappointed by the team’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The NFF’s announcement has elicited mixed reactions, with some fans urging the federation’s board members and Finidi to step down.
Reports suggest that Finidi is frustrated with the NFF leadership. He is particularly upset that, during a recent meeting with the sports minister, the NFF did not address the late arrival of players to the camp or their failure to mobilize Nigerian supporters in Ivory Coast for the match against Benin Republic last Monday.
According to these reports, Finidi, who has managed only two games since taking charge in April, submitted his resignation on Tuesday morning.
However, when contacted via WhatsApp, Gusau responded, “Not yet aware,” indicating that he had not been informed of Finidi’s resignation.
