My Problem With Nnamdi Kanu’s Case – AGF

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has addressed the complexities surrounding the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Speaking at the Sectoral Ministerial Briefing in Abuja, marking the first anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Fagbemi highlighted the legal intricacies that differentiate Kanu’s situation from that of Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest.

Fagbemi emphasized that Kanu’s offence is significantly more complex and can only be resolved through a judicial process.

“The matter is still in court; let’s wait for the court,” he stated, underscoring the importance of allowing the legal system to take its course without undue interference.

The AGF pointed out the stark differences between Kanu’s case and Sowore’s. “Sowore and Kanu are not the same,” he explained. “When it comes to the first one, I didn’t have difficulty to say go, but I have difficulty with the second one.” This distinction highlights the varied nature of the charges and the legal challenges involved.

Sowore, who was arrested in 2019 for allegedly calling for the forceful takeover of the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, saw his charges dropped earlier this year. In February, the federal government, through the AGF’s office, filed a notice of discontinuation of his case.

In contrast, Kanu remains in detention, with Fagbemi noting that his detention is in accordance with the Constitution.

The ongoing court proceedings will ultimately determine the outcome of his case, reflecting the legal and procedural complexities that make it a more challenging situation for the AGF.
