Dr. Adie Charges Biomedical Engineers To Embrace Excellence At National Capacity-Building Programme
Abuja, Nigeria – The Chief Trainer of the ongoing National Biomedical Engineering Capacity-Building Programme, Dr. Awafung Emmanuel Adie, has called on participants to embrace professionalism, innovation, and excellence as critical drivers of Nigeria’s healthcare transformation.
Speaking at the opening of the six-day intensive training programme scheduled for February 16–20, 2026, Dr. Adie described the initiative as a landmark effort aimed at strengthening biomedical engineering practice and equipping professionals with the technical competence and leadership mindset required to support modern healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
He commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for supporting the programme, noting that the initiative reflects a strong commitment to healthcare sector reform through capacity building, technology management, and human resource development.
According to him, investing in biomedical engineers translates directly to improved patient safety, enhanced healthcare quality, and accelerated national development.
“By investing in biomedical engineers, the government is investing in patient safety, healthcare quality, and national development,” Dr. Adie stated.
“Biomedical engineering is no longer in the background—it is now recognized as a critical pillar of modern healthcare in Nigeria.”
Strengthening Technical and Professional Capacity
Dr. Adie emphasized that the selected participants were chosen based on their dedication and potential within the profession, reminding them that biomedical engineering goes beyond maintaining machines—it plays a central role in saving lives and supporting clinical excellence.
He noted that every properly functioning ventilator, diagnostic system, and life-support machine represents the silent but vital contribution of a biomedical engineer.
The training programme is designed to provide practical and hands-on knowledge in key areas including:
* Equipment maintenance and repairs
* Medical equipment management and inventory systems
* Safety standards and quality assurance
* Professional ethics and workplace excellence
* Career development and leadership in biomedical engineering
Dr. Adie described the programme as more than a classroom exercise, calling it a transformative opportunity to upgrade competence, confidence, and global competitiveness.
He urged participants to actively engage, share experiences, and maximize the learning opportunity, stressing that continuous professional development is essential in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Elevating the Profession
Highlighting the strategic importance of biomedical engineering to Nigeria’s healthcare future, Dr. Adie challenged practitioners to shift from being perceived merely as “equipment repairers” to recognized healthcare technology managers, innovators, and leaders.
He underscored the need for integrity, accountability, teamwork, and professionalism, stating that the future of the healthcare system depends partly on the quality and mindset of biomedical engineers being trained today.
Appreciation to Key Stakeholders
Dr. Adie expressed special appreciation to the initiator of the programme, Chief Emmanuel Oriakhi, CEO of Healthy Living Communications Ltd., for his foresight and longstanding contributions to improving healthcare service delivery in Nigeria.
He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts between Healthy Living Communications Ltd. and the College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (CBET), describing their partnership as a model of effective stakeholder cooperation.
Call to Excellence
Addressing participants directly, Dr. Adie urged them to leave the programme not only with certificates but with:
* Stronger technical competence
* Improved professional attitude
* Greater confidence
* Renewed commitment to service
* A clear career vision
“You are ambassadors of biomedical engineering in Nigeria,” he said. “Let your work speak of excellence, reliability, and professionalism wherever you serve.”
He concluded by reminding participants of the profound impact of their profession:
“The machines we maintain today may save the lives of tomorrow.
The skills we learn today may define the future of healthcare in Nigeria.
The attitude we develop today will shape our legacy.”
Dr. Adie reaffirmed his gratitude to the Federal Government for the initiative and wished participants a productive and successful training.
