Again: Bandits Storm Church, Killed Clergy, Many Others
Information reaching IBOM FOCUS that, In the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, unknown gunmen suspected of being bandits killed a Catholic Reverend Father, Fanem Nguban, and three other parishioners. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after morning mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Kastina-Ala, according to reports.
Locals say the gunmen stormed the village of Agu Centre in the state’s Mbatyula/Mberev council around 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, just as the church was closing for morning mass. “As soon as the morning mass was over and parishioners were heading home, some men entered the church and asked of the senior priest,” said one of the locals who did not want to be identified.
“They told them to go inside, but we heard gunshots in a split second, and everyone ran for cover. By the time we returned, the Reverend father and others were dead.” The gunmen are said to have infiltrated the neighborhood and set fire to a few buildings.
The attack on the Katsina-Alla community was confirmed by the council chairman, Alfred Atera, who said unknown gunmen invaded the community between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, killing a Reverend father and three others and torching the village.

MfaveTumachihi, Mbangohor Tsebo, and Orlukaa Ulu were among the others killed, according to him. “Unknown gunmen came and burned a village called Agu Centre in mbatyula /mberev council ward in Katsina-Alla and killed Rev Fr Moses Ngugban and three others by name: Mfave Tumachihi, Mbangohor Tsebo, and Orlukaa Ulu,” Atera said.
The State Police Command also reported the attack in a text message to our correspondent, saying that bandits targeted St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Kastina-Ala LGA. “Attack on St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Sai, Kastina-Ala LGA by bandits has been confirmed,” said Catherine Anene, a spokesperson for the Order. During the attack, Rv. Fr. Nguban Fanen and three others were killed.
The bodies have been deposited at the General Hospital in Katsina-Ala, while the hoodlums are being pursued by a joint operation of the police and other security agencies.
