State Attorneys-General Back Correctional Reforms, Seek End to Abuse in Prisons

State Attorneys-General have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s correctional system, calling for urgent reforms to address allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and inhumane treatment of inmates.
Speaking on behalf of the Body of State Attorneys-General at a stakeholders’ engagement convened by the Federal Ministry of Interior in Abuja, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Kwara State, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, said the meeting was timely given growing concerns about conditions within correctional facilities.
The engagement focused on the report of an independent investigative panel set up to probe allegations of corruption, torture, and degrading treatment of inmates by the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Sulyman commended the Minister of Interior for recognising the Body of State Attorneys-General as critical stakeholders in the administration of justice, noting that the forum provides an avenue for collaboration and effective discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
He described the Nigerian Correctional Service as a key component of the criminal justice system, recalling that its transition from the former Nigerian Prisons Service was aimed at promoting rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration of inmates into society.
Despite these reforms, he noted that the service continues to face significant challenges, including allegations of corruption, abuse, and rights violations, which necessitated the establishment of the investigative panel.
According to him, State Attorneys-General are fully aware of the complexities and responsibilities facing the correctional system and have consistently partnered with relevant authorities to improve its operations.
He said the stakeholders’ meeting reflects a shared commitment to building a justice system that respects fundamental human rights, including those of inmates, while ensuring public safety.
Sulyman urged participants to actively contribute to discussions, expressing confidence that the deliberations would produce practical solutions to strengthen the correctional system and enhance collaboration among stakeholders.
He reiterated the resolve of State Attorneys-General to support reforms that will ensure a more accountable, humane, and effective correctional service in Nigeria.
