570% Fuel Price Hike: ADC Tells Nigerians to Emulate Americans, Reject Tinubu, APC in January

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on Nigerians to emulate American voters by rejecting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming January elections over the rising cost of living and increasing petrol prices.

The party said the recent defeat of the ruling Republican Party in the United States midterm elections showed that citizens could hold governments accountable for economic policies that negatively affect their livelihoods.

The ADC made its position known in a press statement released on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
It argued that the American election outcome reinforced its position that economic affordability, particularly fuel prices and the general cost of living, had become critical factors in determining electoral choices.

According to the party, Nigerians have experienced an approximately 570 per cent increase in petrol prices since President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023.

It contrasted the situation with the United States, where voters reportedly reacted to a nearly 37 per cent increase in fuel prices in several states.
The party disclosed that average petrol prices in Nigeria increased from N238.11 per litre in May 2023 to N1,596.25 by May 2026.

It said the sharp increase had triggered a chain of economic difficulties, including rising transportation costs, higher food prices and growing pressure on small businesses.
“The lesson from America is simple: governments must answer to the people for their economic decisions. In January, the cost of living must be at the centre of Nigeria’s democratic choice,” the ADC stated.

The party accused the Federal Government of failing to provide convincing evidence that the removal of fuel subsidies had improved the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
It also challenged the Tinubu administration and the APC to explain how they intended to make fuel, electricity, food and transportation affordable as Nigerians prepare for the January 16 elections.

The ADC insisted that the economic challenges confronting Nigerians should influence their voting decisions, urging citizens to vote against the ruling party.
