Nigerian Navy Rescues Bayelsa Commissioner, Five Others After Boat Mishap, One Person Missing
The Nigerian Navy has rescued seven passengers, including the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment, Dr Ebieri Jones, following a boat accident in Abedigbene waters, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The incident occurred on November 5, 2026, involving a passenger boat travelling from Yenagoa to Akassa with eight persons on board.

The rescue operation was conducted by personnel of the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO, in collaboration with local divers and members of the Abedigbene Fishing Community.
According to the Navy, the operation commenced after a local fisherman raised a distress alert. Personnel deployed at Labrador Lagosgbene Houseboat immediately mobilised to the scene and launched search and rescue efforts.
Those rescued included Commissioner Jones, an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and five other passengers.
The survivors were taken to the houseboat, where they received first aid. Preliminary medical assessments indicated that none of them sustained visible injuries.
However, a police officer who was among the passengers remains missing, as search and rescue operations continue to locate him.
On November 6, the Commissioner and the six other survivors were transported to Yenagoa to reunite with their respective families.
The Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO commended the naval personnel for their swift response and professionalism, while appreciating the support provided by local divers and members of the host community.
The Navy said the successful rescue operation underscores its commitment to maritime safety, protection of lives and effective emergency response, while highlighting the importance of collaboration between security agencies and coastal communities.
