A lesson for Everyone to learn: The Story of Justice Walter Onnoghen: How Time Changed the Fortunes of Those Involved

The story of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, offers a powerful lesson about life, power and the consequences of our decisions.
Sometimes, the people who appear to have the upper hand today may find themselves facing unexpected challenges tomorrow. History has a way of reminding us that power is temporary and that our actions can have consequences beyond what we imagine.
In 2019, during the build-up to Nigeria’s general elections, the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari moved against Onnoghen, who was then the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The development came after several judicial decisions had reportedly displeased the Federal Government. One notable case was the Supreme Court’s 2016 acquittal of former Senate President Bukola Saraki in a case involving allegations relating to his asset declaration.
As the 2019 elections approached, questions arose about the possible implications of Onnoghen remaining in office. His removal subsequently became one of the most controversial events in Nigeria’s judicial history.
The Roles of Malami, Danladi Umar and Tanko Muhammad
One of the central figures in the controversy was Abubakar Malami, who served as Attorney General of the Federation under Buhari.
Malami obtained an ex parte order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal seeking Onnoghen’s suspension. On January 23, 2019, the tribunal issued the order, and two days later, Buhari suspended Onnoghen and swore in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad as acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Justice Danladi Umar, who was then Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, presided over the proceedings against Onnoghen. The tribunal subsequently convicted the former CJN over false asset declaration following a trial that lasted approximately 94 days.
The process generated widespread controversy, particularly over whether the constitutional procedures for removing a judicial officer had been properly followed.
Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, who was the most senior Supreme Court justice after Onnoghen, accepted the appointment as acting CJN and was sworn in on January 25, 2019.
What Happened to Those Involved?
Years later, the fortunes of some of the prominent figures associated with the controversy changed significantly.
Malami, who served as Attorney General under Buhari, subsequently faced criminal proceedings under the Tinubu administration over allegations involving money laundering, conspiracy and the concealment of illicit funds. He also faced proceedings relating to properties linked to him. These developments represent separate legal matters and should not be interpreted as proof that his subsequent troubles were connected to the Onnoghen case.
Danladi Umar was removed as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal in November 2024 following a Senate decision. He later faced a separate corruption case and was reportedly remanded in custody before being granted bail.
Tanko Muhammad, who succeeded Onnoghen as CJN, resigned from office in June 2022 following reports of a petition by Supreme Court justices alleging corruption and the diversion of funds intended for their welfare. He died on December 16, 2025, at the age of 71, while receiving medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, under whose administration the events surrounding Onnoghen’s removal occurred, also passed away.
Meanwhile, Onnoghen’s legal battle eventually took another turn. On November 4, 2024, the Court of Appeal reportedly discharged and acquitted him in the case arising from his conviction by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Since then, he has largely remained away from the public spotlight, living a quiet and private life.
The Lesson From the Story
The story of Walter Onnoghen and the people associated with his removal raises important questions about power, justice, accountability and the choices people make while occupying positions of authority.
It also reminds us that public office is temporary and that the decisions made by those in power can shape their legacies long after they leave office.
As the saying goes, you cannot sow rice and expect to harvest beans.
Life does not always deliver immediate consequences, and events that happen to different people are not necessarily connected. Nevertheless, history reminds us of the importance of integrity, fairness and respect for the rule of law.
Ultimately, the Onnoghen saga remains a significant chapter in Nigeria’s judicial and political history, with lessons for public officials and citizens alike.
