2027: Over 1,000 Muslim Clerics Ask Tinubu Not To Seek Re-Election

Over 1,000 Islamic clerics have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to contest the 2027 presidential election, blaming his administration’s economic policies and the worsening insecurity for the hardship faced by Nigerians.
The clerics made the demand at a national conference held in Kano on Sunday, themed “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections.”
In a communique issued at the end of the conference, the participants said policies introduced by the Tinubu administration, including fuel subsidy removal, naira exchange-rate reforms, higher electricity tariffs and tax reforms, had increased the burden on ordinary citizens.
They argued that the government had continued to pursue policies that increased hardship while prioritising revenue generation despite the rising cost of living and unemployment.
The conference participants also raised alarm over persistent killings, kidnappings and other terrorist activities across the country, particularly in the North-West.
They called on the Federal Government to urgently tackle insecurity and reconsider its economic policies.
According to the communique, the clerics agreed that Tinubu should not be re-elected in 2027 unless his administration changes the policies they described as harmful.
They further advised the President to voluntarily withdraw from the 2027 race, warning that if he refused, Nigerians should reject his candidacy and elect leaders they believe can provide better governance.
The position comes against the backdrop of reported endorsements of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima by JIBWIS and the Qadiriyya Sufi sect for the 2027 election.
