“I H@te Christians Who Drink Beer. Kil| Them All.”- Gumi

A wave of outrage has followed the circulation of a statement attributed to Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, in which he allegedly said, “I only h@te Christians who drink beer. Kil| them all.”
The remark, which has been widely shared on social media, has drawn sharp condemnation from religious groups, civil society organisations and members of the public, who describe it as inciting violence and religious hatred.
Critics warn that such statements, if left unchecked, could inflame sectarian tensions in a country already grappling with insecurity and deep religious sensitivities. They have called on security agencies and relevant authorities to investigate the source and context of the statement and take appropriate action if it is confirmed to be authentic.
Religious leaders from both Christian and Muslim communities have urged calm, stressing the need for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among Nigerians, regardless of faith or personal choices.
As of the time of filing this report, Sheikh Gumi has not publicly responded to or clarified the statement, nor has any official explanation been issued on the circumstances under which the comment was allegedly made.
The development has reignited debate over hate speech, religious extremism and the responsibility of influential figures to promote peace rather than division in Nigeria’s multi‑religious society.

Rev. Ladi Peter Thompson explains the historical role of Gumi in Nigeria from the late 90s into the early 2000s. He breaks down events that shaped the security and social landscape of the country. “I only h@te Christians who drink beer. Kil| them all.” — Sheikh Gumi —
