Popular Nigerian Senator Caught on Camera Assaulting Constituent
The Senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, Senator Kelvin Chukwu, has come under public scrutiny after videos surfaced online allegedly showing him physically assaulting one of his constituents during a football tournament he organised.
The incident reportedly occurred at the final match of a football competition sponsored by the lawmaker. The tournament began in December 2025, with the final held on Saturday, January 3, 2026. The identity of the assaulted constituent has been withheld.
According to footage obtained by Naija News House, Senator Chukwu was seen engaging in a heated exchange with the constituent on the football pitch. In one of the videos, an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) attached to the senator allegedly assaulted the individual as armed security operatives looked on. Another clip shows the senator himself allegedly running after the constituent outside the pitch and slapping him.
Despite being the victim of the alleged assault, the constituent was subsequently arrested and detained by security personnel attached to the senator, according to reports.
A witness to the incident said the disagreement began during the match and quickly escalated.
“Senator Kelvin Chukwu slapped one of the players during his village Christmas competition in Amurri after a minor disagreement,” the source claimed.
“For years, he has not done anything for the community. He only came this December to organise a football competition because elections are close.”
The development has sparked outrage among community members and on social media, with many condemning the alleged abuse of power and calling for an investigation into the conduct of the senator and his security details.
Senator Chukwu recently defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was originally elected on the platform of the Labour Party after emerging as its candidate following the assassination of his elder brother, Oyibo Chukwu, on February 22, 2023.
After the killing, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rescheduled the Enugu East Senatorial election to March 18, 2023, to allow the party nominate a replacement candidate. Chukwu won the LP primary with 223 votes, defeating three other aspirants who received no votes.
In the general election, he polled 69,136 votes, defeating the then incumbent senator and former Enugu State governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, who garnered 48,701 votes.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Senator Chukwu nor the relevant security agencies have issued an official statement regarding the incident.
