This Is An Attack On Press Freedom; GOMEP Kicks Against Closure Of Radio Station By Gov Bago

The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers (GOMEP) Nigeria has strongly kicked against the closure of Badeggi Radio Station in Niger state by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, describing the move as an attack on press freedom and a way to silence media houses in Nigeria.
In a press release issued on Saturday and jointly signed by Dr. Dozie Nwankodu, National President, and Comrade Dominic Edem, spokesman, GOMEP stated that this act constitutes censorship and intimidation, warning that such actions undermine democratic governance and the right to free expression.
According to GOMEP, this highest form of intimidation undermines the fundamental principles of a democratic society, where a free press is essential for holding those in power accountable. GOMEP referenced Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which guarantee freedom of expression and press freedom.
The Guild emphasized that no governor, including Governor Bago, has the right to close any media house, stressing that only the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has the authority to sanction broadcasting outfits after conducting a proper investigation into alleged misconduct.
GOMEP called on Governor Bago to refrain from intimidating media houses. The Guild noted that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, has condemned Governor Bago’s action, stating that only NBC has the power to sanction any broadcasting station, and urged the federal government to order the unsealing of the radio station’s premises while an investigation is carried out.
GOMEP cautioned the Nigerian government to respect journalists rules, emphasizing that no country without press freedom can succeed well. The Guild urged government officials to allow journalists to work effectively without fear.
