Angry Mob Sets Car Ablaze Over Pedestrian’s Death
A yet-to-be-identified pedestrian was, late on Saturday, crushed to death by an overspeeding vehicle in an accident that occurred around the Onipanu area of Lagos State.
The vehicle, a Toyota Venza, was however set ablaze by angry miscreants who condemned the driving of the vehicle’s owner.
Commuters around the area had a hectic time as the burnt vehicle created gridlock along the ever-busy road.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
The LASEMA boss said, “In response to distress calls received at 2045hrs via the CRM on 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency numbers, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans and its Response Team from Onipanu.”
He added, “Upon arrival at 2048hrs to the incident scene, LASEMA’s Cobra Response Team observed that a Toyota Venza, registration number EKY 839 HU, oversped and hit a pedestrian at the aforementioned location.”
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Agency’s Response Team revealed that the driver of the above-mentioned Toyota Venza was on top speed when he lost control and collided with a male pedestrian crossing the highway.
According to the LASEMA boss, “One yet-to-be-identified adult male lost his life in the incident and had been taken off the scene before the arrival of the responders.”
The Agency’s Response Team informed officials of the Nigerian Police Force of the incident and the volatility of the scene due to the activities of miscreants, which escalated the situation and led to the vandalization and burning of the accident vehicle.
LASEMA’s Cobra Response Team also activated the necessary sophisticated recovery truck for the operation.
