BREAKING: Suicide Bombing Kills Minister, Three Security Personnel, Photo
A suicide bombing killed Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, the Taliban’s minister for refugees and repatriation, at his Kabul office, Afghanistan on Wednesday.
The blast also claimed the lives of three of his bodyguards, making it the highest-profile casualty for the Taliban since regaining power three years ago.
“The enemies of Islam martyred” Haqqani in a “cowardly attack,” the Taliban’s Chief Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed stated in a post on X.
Haqqani was a prominent figure in the Haqqani Network, a militant group responsible for deadly attacks on the United States forces in Afghanistan.
He was on the FBI’s wanted list with a $5million reward on his head and was the uncle of interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani, the group’s leader.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility.
However, an Islamic State offshoot, a rival to the Taliban, has been responsible for similar attacks, including one targeting Chinese diplomats.
Haqqani played a pivotal role in forming the Taliban government following the US withdrawal in 2021.
The Haqqani Network and the Taliban collaborated to overthrow the previous Afghan government.
