FG Warns Against Illegal Use of Ambassadorial Titles, Threatens Prosecution

The Federal Government has warned against the increasing trend of individuals and groups illegally adopting diplomatic titles, particularly the title of “Ambassador,” without proper authorization.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government expressed concern over the activities of unscrupulous persons and organisations who confer such titles on themselves or unsuspecting members of the public, describing the practice as unlawful and misleading.
The spokesperson noted that offences linked to the trend include the unauthorized use of diplomatic designations such as “Ambassador” and “Diplomatic Envoy,” the fraudulent conferment of these titles by self-styled organisations, and the use of fake diplomatic materials, including passports, identity cards, and vehicle number plates bearing the insignia of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The government stressed that such actions amount to impersonation and constitute criminal offences under Nigerian law, urging all those involved to desist immediately or face prosecution.
Clarifying the legal position, the Ministry stated that only the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has the authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors on behalf of Nigeria. It emphasized that no individual, group, or non-governmental organisation is permitted to confer diplomatic titles.
The statement also dismissed claims that ambassadorial titles can be obtained through financial payments or membership subscriptions, describing such practices as fraudulent and without legal backing.
While acknowledging the use of “brand ambassadors” in marketing and public relations, the Ministry clarified that such roles do not grant individuals the legal right to adopt the title “Ambassador” as part of their official identity.
The Ministry further disclosed that it is working with relevant agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Vehicle Inspection Office, to identify and prosecute offenders, particularly those involved in issuing fake diplomatic number plates and documents.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic service and vowed to take decisive action against any form of misrepresentation capable of bringing the country into disrepute.
